Grand Jury Indicts Man for Allegedly Attacking Elderly Woman Above Memphis Funeral Home
MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Tuesday that the state Grand Jury for Shelby County indicted a Memphis man for allegedly attacking an 87-year-old woman who lived above a Memphis funeral home.

The Grand Jury indicted Alex House, 21, for attempted first degree murder, especially aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary.

According to the affidavit of complaint filed in this case, on April 24, 2008, a male suspect broke into the Qualls Funeral Home located at 479 Vance, forced his way into an upstairs residence. Cenetra Qualls, 87, confronted the intruder and was stabbed at least four times in the chest, neck and abdomen. The victim survived the attack.

Memphis police arrested House on April 25 after receiving a tip from CrimeStoppers.

Attempted first degree murder and especially aggravated robbery are class A felonies, which carry standard sentences of 15-25 year in prison. Aggravated burglary is a class C felony which carries a standard sentence of 3-6 years in prison.

Attempted first degree murder and especially aggravated robbery are charges covered by the D.A.’s “No Deals” policy on violent crimes. Exceptions to the policy are made only for legal or ethical reasons.
