MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Monday that the state Grand jury for Shelby County indicted a former Shelby County Sheriff’s deputy for reckless homicide and several other charges related to a June 2008 incident in which a driver of pick up truck was found dead following a crash on an Interstate-240 exit ramp.
The Grand Jury indicted Alvin Dortch, 47, on September 11 for reckless homicide, reckless endangerment, three counts of official misconduct, official oppression, and two counts of false offense report.
Dortch was taken into custody on Monday and is being held on a $5,000 bond. Under Tennessee law, an indictment cannot be made public or confirmed until the defendant is in custody.
According to the indictment, Dortch “unlawfully and recklessly” killed Ignacio Arcos, the driver of a vehicle found flipped upside down near the south Jackson exit of I-240. The alleged offenses occurred between June 27 and June 30, 2008.
Dortch was terminated from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office following an administrative hearing on July 15, 2008. Dortch had been a deputy since 1982, had been assigned to the Metro DUI Squad.
Reckless homicide and false report charges are class D felonies; reckless endangerment, official misconduct, and official oppression are class E felonies. The standard sentence for a class D felony is two to four years in prison; the standard sentence for a class E felony is one to two years in prison. |
