MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Wednesday that the state Grand Jury for Shelby County had indicted the former president of the Memphis Police Association for allegedly stealing funds from the organization during his term.
The Grand Jury indicted Thomas Turner, 52, for theft of property over $10,000. The indictment alleges that Turner stole a sum of money from the Memphis Police Association between November 1, 2004 and July 31, 2007.
The indictment is the result of an investigation conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Municipal Audit in the Office of Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury. The Comptroller’s office is expected to release its investigative report in the very near future.
“It is our contention that Mr. Turner has violated the law and that his actions have victimized not only the Memphis Police Association as a whole but each fellow police officer who is a member. We will do what we can to hold him accountable and provide justice for the victims,” said District Attorney Gibbons.
Turner turned himself in Tuesday to be booked in the Shelby County Jail. He was released on $10,000 bond. An arraignment date has not yet been set. Theft of property over $10,000 is a class C felony which carries a standard sentence of three to six years in prison.
Assistant District Attorneys William Bright and Byron Winsett are prosecuting this case. Both are assigned to the D.A.’s White Collar Crime Prosecution Unit. |
