Jury Convicts Man for Murder of Bosnian Truck Driver

MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Friday that a criminal court jury found a Memphis man guilty as indicted for shooting and killing a truck driver during a 2007 robbery. 

The jury convicted Aaron Malone, 35, of first degree murder in the perpetration of aggravated robbery. Malone was automatically sentenced to life in prison.

According to testimony, on September 17, 2007, Malone shot and killed Hako Velic during a robbery in the cab of the victim’s truck parked on Knight Arnold. The Bosnian truck driver was on a run to Memphis from his home in Louisville. Velic, who fled Bosnia, had just become an American citizen.

Co-defendant Calvin Nelson pleaded guilty to facilitation to commit first degree murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Assistant District Attorney Reginald Henderson and Pamela Fleming prosecuted this case.
