Man Convicted of Stealing Trailer With Lawn Equipment

MEMPHIS – February 26, 2016 - A Mississippi man with a lengthy criminal record has been convicted of theft over $10,000 for stealing a trailer loaded with lawn-care equipment, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Thursday.
Defendant William Sappington’s latest conviction could result in a sentence of 10 to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced on March 24 by Criminal Court Judge W. Mark Ward.
He would not be eligible for parole until completing 45 percent of his sentence.
Sappington, 54, of Hickory Flat, Miss., has 10 prior felony convictions. He is being held in the Shelby County Jail.
He and another man were arrested around noon on Feb. 5, 2013, in the process of removing the trailer hitch from the owner’s pickup truck and connecting it to their blue Chevy pickup.The trailer was parked in front of the owner’s home in the 5100 block of Judy Lynn Ave. in the Parkway Village area of southeast Memphis. A codefendant in the case died of causes unrelated to the crime.
The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Ann Schiller of the DA’s Special Prosecution Unit which seeks the maximum sentence allowed by allow for repeat felony offenders.
