Man Pleads to 17 Crimes, Sentenced to 57 Years

MEMPHIS – April 22, 2016 - A North Memphis man has pled guilty to 17 felony offenses in six separate incidents in which victims were beaten, raped, robbed or assaulted at gunpoint, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Friday.
Derek Horne, 23, of the 2400 block of Vandale St., entered his guilty pleas Wednesday before Criminal Court Judge James Lammey who approved a sentence of 57 years in prison.
His crimes involving eight victims included four counts each of aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary, aggravated rape, attempted aggravated rape, especially aggravated kidnapping, especially aggravated burglary, attempted aggravated burglary, theft over $1,000, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
Horne admitted committing the crimes between November of 2011 and April of 2012 at residences near Sam Cooper Boulevard and Hollywood, near Walnut Grove and Goodlett, near Hollywood and Avery, near the Memphis Zoo, near White Station and Poplar, and near his own home.He stole cash, jewelry, computers, televisions and credit cards.
Investigators said Horne used a pistol in each case, beat some victims and, in one case, left a 54-year-old woman with two broken kneecaps, bruises and a missing tooth.
The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Josh Corman of the DA’s Special Victims Unit (SVU) which prosecutes cases of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse of child victims; rape and aggravated rape of adult victims, and abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults.
