Three Convicted in Robbery, Murder of Senior SCSO
MEMPHIS – May 9, 2016 - Three men have been convicted in the 2012 robbery and beating death of a 61-year-old man in his apartment near Downtown, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Amy Weirich said Monday.
Defendants Ashton Buford, 21, Melvin Hopkins, 22, and Devante Terrell, 23, were convicted Saturday of first-degree murder in a trial before Criminal Court Judge W. Mark Ward.
The jury also convicted them of aggravated robbery and especially aggravated kidnapping.They automatically were sentenced to life in prison for the murder and will be sentenced for the other crimes on June 1.
The victim, Jessie Wilson, was severely beaten by the defendants on July 25, 2012, in his apartment at 550 Jefferson Ave. He died of his injuries on Sept. 30 that year.
The case against a fourth defendant, Robert Armstrong, is pending. He had just turned 15 the day of the crime.
The trial was handled by Asst. Dist. Attys. Greg Gilbert and Omar Malik.
