Defendant Marquel Stewart was convicted of aggravated robbery and is scheduled to be sentenced June 10 by Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee.
The incident occurred on Aug. 11, 2013, when a man using an ATM in the 3300 block of South Third was confronted by a gunman who demanded money. When the victim said he had only $20, the gunman demanded that he withdraw another $20 from the machine. After the victim gave the $40 to the gunman, the robber got into the victim’s car and tried to drive away.
The car died, however, and would not restart.
The gunmen left on foot, but a witness followed him and directed police officers to a wooded area where was last seen. A K9 officer helped other officers in the search and apprehension of Stewart not far from the crime scene.
The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Steve Ragland.
