Man Convicted in Holdup at ATM

MEMPHIS – May 13, 2016 - A jury has convicted a 31-year-old man in the holdup of an ATM customer at gunpoint three years ago in southwest Memphis, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Friday.
Defendant Marquel Stewart was convicted of aggravated robbery and is scheduled to be sentenced June 10 by Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee.
The incident occurred on Aug. 11, 2013, when a man using an ATM in the 3300 block of South Third was confronted by a gunman who demanded money.When the victim said he had only $20, the gunman demanded that he withdraw another $20 from the machine. After the victim gave the $40 to the gunman, the robber got into the victim’s car and tried to drive away.
The car died, however, and would not restart.
The gunmen left on foot, but a witness followed him and directed police officers to a wooded area where was last seen. A K9 officer helped other officers in the search and apprehension of Stewart not far from the crime scene.
