MEMPHIS – November 8, 2016 - A longtime caregiver for 71-year-old man who died last year of complications from multiple blunt force injuries was indicted Tuesday on second-degree murder and other charges, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Defendant Joshua Gilley, 37, who had been victim Mackie Finlay’s caregiver for 11 years in the 1000 block of Echles, also was indicted on physical abuse/gross neglect of an impaired adult resulting in serious mental or physical harm, and aggravated assault with a bullwhip.
Finlay died on Sept. 13 last year, one day after he was brought to the hospital with multiple injuries investigators said were consistent with abuse, including broken bones, chest abrasions, numerous bruises, a brain injury and internal injuries.
Gilley is being held on $200,000 bond.
The case is being handled by Eric Christensen, chief prosecutor of the DA’s Special Victims Unit which prosecutes cases of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse of child victims; rape and aggravated rape of adult victims, and abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults.
