Following a weeklong trial, a Criminal Court jury convicted defendant Felipe Gonzales, 43, of rape of a child and aggravated sexual battery. He remains in custody and faces a minimum of 25 years in prison with no parole when he is sentenced next month by Judge Lee Coffee.
Investigators said the incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. on Jan. 6, 2013, when Gonzales entered the child’s bedroom, dragged her out of bed and began having sex with her. He quickly left when he heard the girl’s parents return home, but was later arrested.
Gonzales is a relative of the family.
The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Attys. Lessie Rainey and Jeff Jones. Rainey is with the DA’s Special Victims Unit which prosecutes cases of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse of child victims; rape and aggravated rape of adult victims, and abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults.
