Motorist Indicted on Vehicular Homicide, Drunken Driving

MEMPHIS – Feb. 28, 20917 - A 49-year-old Oakhaven man was indicted Tuesday on multiple criminal charges, including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident involving death and drunken driving in excess of .20, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Defendant Walter Lee Williams of the 3700 block of Wickcliff Lane is being held in the Shelby County Jail for the death last year of pedestrian Clarissa Rhodes.
The 24-year-old woman was struck and killed around 6 p.m. on Feb. 20 last year as she was crossing Hickory Hill Road at Connector Road in southeast Memphis.Investigators said Williams’ northbound 1994 Cadillac Seville struck Rhodes, flipping her into the air several times and causing her to be struck by a second vehicle whose driver stopped and was not charged. The victim died at the scene.
Williams did not stop to render aid or to call police, and was arrested a short time later in the 5800 block of Winchester Road where he had pulled into the private drive of a strip mall.
The case is being handled by the DA’s DUI Prosecution Unit.
