April 7, 2017 – A 20-year-old man who told witnesses he was going to kill a man who allegedly robbed him was convicted Thursday of first-degree murder, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
A Criminal Court jury found defendant Merrico Jackson guilty following a four-day trial before Judge James Lammey Jr. who sentenced Jackson to life in prison.
The victim, Marcus Griggs, 28, was found fatally wounded on Jan. 25 last year on the parking lot of the American Inn Hotel at 3265 Elvis Presley Blvd. Several witnesses told investigators that Jackson had told them he was going to kill Griggs because Griggs had robbed him earlier that day.
Witnesses also said they had seen Jackson with a gun shortly before Griggs was shot and killed.
The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Attys. Glen Baity and Tyler Parks.
