The fourth annual event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Pipkin Building on Tiger Lane near the Liberty Bowl Stadium.
Sponsors of the DA’s bikes-for-perfect-attendance incentive program include the Hyde Family Foundation, FedEx, Walmart, Monogram Foods and the Rotary Club of Memphis.
Also, the Memphis Hightailers Bicycle Club is donating helmets and t-shirts to the “perfect” students, and also will be teaching bicycle safety after the bikes are distributed to the 249 winners. Food trucks will be on hand for the event.
The students are from Alton Elementary, Aspire Coleman, Aspire East, Aspire Hanley 1 & 2, Chickasaw Middle, Ford Road Elementary, Georgian Hills Middle, Hawkins Mill Elementary, Hickory Ridge Elementary, Hickory Ridge Middle, Magnolia Elementary, Ridgeway Middle and Winridge Middle. All of the schools participate in the DA’s Truancy Reduction Program. Students must bring their perfect attendance certificates from their schools and the congratulatory letters sent to them by Gen. Weirich.
“I am so proud of these young people for their hard work and determination,” said Gen. Weirich. “Each year we hear stories about the special efforts they make to get to school every day, whether it’s rainy, snowy or sunny. The parents, grandparents and guardians who help them get to school each also deserve a big thank you.”
