Two Men Sentenced in Robbery, Murder Case

June 6, 2017 – Two men convicted earlier this year in a mid-day robbery and murder in 2015 near Lamar and Prescott were given lengthy prison sentences Tuesday, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Criminal Court Judge W. Mark Ward sentenced Jamaal Austin to life in prison plus 24 years, while codefendant Dalvin Smith was sentenced to 37 years for the killing of 25-year-old Hillvar Lopez on Aug. 16, 2015, outside an apartment in the 1700 block of Morlye St.
Witnesses said Austin shot the victim in the head during the robbery of victim Lopez and his cousin.
A jury in March convicted Austin, 20, of first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, two counts of attempted aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and employing a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. 
Smith, 23, was convicted of reckless homicide, facilitation to commit aggravated robbery, attempted aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and employing a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony.
The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Attys. Greg Gilbert and Jose Leon.
