Man Indicted in Stabbing Death of Girlfriend

July 13, 2017 – A Memphis man was indicted on first-degree murder charges Thursday in the stabbing death of his girlfriend whose body was found inside her North Evergreen apartment last November, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Defendant Datel Taylor, 39, is being held without bond in the Shelby County Jail.
The victim, Yvette Joyner, 33, was last seen alive on Nov. 10, 2016, in the company of Taylor, but in the following week neither had been seen in or around her apartment in the 1100 block of North Evergreen south of Chelsea.
Police were called to the location on Nov. 18 and found the victim’s body. The medical examiner ruled the cause of death as multiple stab wounds.
Officers went to Taylor’s last known address on North Hollywood and learned that a relative of Taylor’s had received a letter from Taylor regarding his concern for the well-being of Joyner. The letter was sent from jail where Taylor was booked on Nov. 12 on another matter.
The relative turned the letter over to police, and on Nov. 20 officers made a detective visit to Taylor in jail and escorted him to the homicide office for questioning. After receiving his Miranda rights, Taylor told officers he stabbed Joiner during an argument on the night of Nov. 11.
The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Omar Malik of the DA's Intimate Partners Domestic Violence Unit (IPDV). The IPDV Unit prosecutes domestic violence cases involving intimate partners.
