Defendant Mario Scales, 30, had an order of protection placed against him and was under court order to have no contact with the victim, 27-year-old Lisa Peoples. He is being held without bond in the Shelby County Jail.
The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. in the 3500 block of Kings Arms St. where the victim’s body was found face down in the grass near the driveway. She was shot more than a half dozen times.
Witnesses said they saw Scales running from the scene with a rifle. He was found hiding in some bushes nearby in the 3500 block of Bishops Gate Drive. An AK-47 assault rifle also was recovered.
Scales told police he shot Peoples because he believed she was involved with another man.
The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Omar Malik of the DA's Domestic Violence Prosecution Unit which handles felony cases of domestic assault and homicide committed by intimate partners.
The Unit also works closely with the Shelby County Family Safety Center to provide services and assistance to victims and their families.
