Man Indicted in Bystander's Death

Dec. 6, 2017 – A Parkway Village-area man has been indicted on first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of an elderly man last summer, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Wednesday.
Charles Dowdy, 35, is charged with killing 69-year-old Charles Collins on June 30 this year as he stood on the second-floor balcony of the Brittney Apartments in the 1900 block of Ezell.
Investigators said Dowdy earlier had argued with his step-father, walked off down a breezeway and then returned a short time later with an assault rifle. He fired multiple rounds in the direction where his stepfather had been, striking bystander Collins in the stomach.
The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Karen Cook, chief prosecutor of the DA’s Special Prosecution Unit (SPU) in Criminal Court Division 8. The SPU seeks the maximum punishment allowed by law for repeat felony offenders.
