Man Convicted of Rape, Attempted Murder

Boyd Boyd
Dec. 16, 2017 – A 36-year-old man was convicted Friday of raping and attempting to kill a woman in 2014 in South Memphis, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
A Criminal Court jury convicted Ricky Boyd of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated rape and rape. He remains in custody and will be sentenced next month by Judge Lee Coffee.
Around 4 a.m. on May 3, 2014, police were called to a wooded area near Willie Mitchell Boulevard and East Olive Avenue where they found a woman screaming, partially clothed and bleeding heavily from the mouth.
She was taken to a hospital where medical personnel discovered that a piece of a stick had been shoved five inches into her mouth under her tongue and had cut into her throat. Doctors performed emergency surgery on the woman to keep her from suffocating from swelling and pooling of blood.
Boyd was linked to the crime by DNA.
The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Attys. Lessie Rainey and Gavin Smith of the DA’s Special Victims Unit which prosecutes cases of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse of child victims; rape and aggravated rape of adult victims, and abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults.
