Feb. 20, 2018 – Two men have been convicted of first-degree murder and 10 counts of attempted first-degree murder stemming from a drive-by shooting into a house with nearly a dozen occupants inside, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Tuesday.
A 27-year-old mother of five, Dominque Thomas, was killed and a 15-year-old boy was shot in the side and critically injured.
Defendants Corderro Avant and Davario Fields, both 25, were automatically sentenced to life in prison on Saturday in Criminal Court. They will face additional punishment when they are sentenced next month for the attempted murder counts and for 11 counts of employing a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony.
The shooting occurred on Aug. 22, 2014, at a house in the 1600 block of Patterson St. where the victims – 10 inside the house and one on the porch - included seven juveniles ranging in age from 18 months to 16 years old.
Witnesses said two vehicles pulled up in front of the house and that the defendants began firing multiple rounds into the structure near Robin Hood Lane and Sharpe Avenue in South Memphis.
Avant and Fields were arrested about three weeks later in Houston, Texas.
The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Attys. Colin Campbell and Sarah Poe.
