Teens Indicted in Murder of Acquaintance

April 20, 2018 – Two teenagers were indicted Thursday on first-degree murder charges in the shooting death last summer of another teen as they were riding in a car in Orange Mound, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Friday.
A grand jury indicted Marshawn Brakefield, 19, and Kevin Young, 17, on charges of first-degree premeditated murder and first-degree murder in the perpetration of a robbery. Both are being held in the Shelby County Jail.
The shooting occurred the night of July 22 last year near Hoskins Drive and Semmes Avenue.
The victim, KaVion Hopkins, 17, was shot multiple times while riding in a vehicle with several others, including the two defendants. Investigators said Brakefield and Young were in the back seat when they attempted to take a pistol from Hopkins who was in the front.
Hopkins was shot multiple times by the defendants who took the victim’s pistol before leaving the vehicle, investigators said. Hopkins was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Michael McCusker.
