Defendant Lawrence King was indicted on three felony counts, including theft of property over $60,000, unlawfully drawing property transfer documents without interest in the property, and unlawfully drawing a lien against real or personal property without a legal basis.
An investigation last year showed that King was collecting rent from a couple living in a four-bedroom home at 7404 Barnstable Road in southeast Memphis, but that property records showed the home belonged to someone other than King.
The couple lived at the home for about six months, but became concerned and went to police when they received a letter informing them that the residence was in foreclosure. The couple has since moved to another location.
Investigators said King had claimed ownership by filing three false documents with the Shelby County Register and sent letters to the couple demanding back rent after they moved.
