Grocery Clerk Indicted in Killing

Ghazali Ghazali
May 24, 2018 – A clerk for a North Memphis grocery accused of shooting a suspected shop lifter he chased from the store in March was indicted Thursday on charges of first-degree murder, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Defendant Anwar Ghazali, 28, is being held on a bond of $1 million.
He was indicted in the death of Dorian Harris, 17, whose body was found with a gunshot wound to the thigh on March 31 behind 1149 Springdale near the grocery.
Investigators said Harris walked into the Top Stop Shop at 1127 Springdale around 10 p.m. on March 29, picked up at least one beer and left the store without paying. Ghazali pulled out a handgun, saw Harris walking north on Springdale and ran after him.
A short distance away, at the corner of Howell and Springdale, Ghazali fired several shots at Harris who was walking away, investigators said, and then returned to the store and said to a witness, “I think I shot him.” Ghazali did not call police.
Harris’s body was found around 4 p.m. two days later, wearing the clothing from the night of the shooting.
The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Tracye Jones.
