North Memphis Man to Face Sentence on Six Count Rape Conviction

On Thursday September 1st, 2011, a jury in Shelby County Criminal Court Division Ten returned a guilty verdict against Byron Becton, age 47, of Memphis, for six counts of aggravated rape.
On December 17th, 2009, around 7:30 PM, the victim, a woman, age 41, was walking on her way to visit a friend in Northeast Memphis. As she approached the 3500 hundred block of Kruger Street, Byron Becton walked up to her from behind and placed an unknown object in her back. He then threatened to kill her and forced her into an abandoned house. Inside the abandoned house, Becton beat, raped and sodomized the woman repeatedly. After the attack, the victim flagged down police when she spotted Becton at a nearby convenience store. Becton was arrested and subsequently charged with the crime by investigators of the Memphis Police Department’s Sex Crimes Bureau.
Becton will face sentencing on September 29th, 2011 in Criminal Court Division Ten. Aggravated rape is a class "A" felony, with sentence range of 15-60 years of imprisonment for each count upon conviction.
Assistant District Attorney Stacy McEndree prosecuted the case.
