Berclair Man Indicted on Murder Charges

Oct. 22, 2018 – A 38-year-old man has been indicted on premeditated first-degree murder and other charges in connection with the strangulation death of a woman earlier this year in the Berclair area of northeast Memphis, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Monday.
Defendant Jimmy Lewis, who is known as Cowboy, also was indicted on charges of first-degree murder in the perpetration of a robbery and aggravated robbery involving serious bodily injury. He is being held without bond.
Police said that around 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 22, 2018, they were called to the 1700 block of W. Lloyd Circle where they found Roberetta ‘Elaine’ Hugo, 56, unresponsive and bleeding from facial injuries.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, and an autopsy later showed that she had been strangled.
A tip to CrimeStoppers the following day led police to Lewis, an acquaintance of the victim’s who was wearing her ring when they arrested him.
The case is being handled by Kirby May, Chief Prosecutor of the DA’s Community Prosecution Unit in Criminal Court Division 6 which handles all felony cases out of the Raleigh-Frayser area’s Old Allen Precinct.
