Carlos Westbrook also was indicted for driving on a license that was cancelled, suspended or revoked, an offense for which he had a prior conviction. He is free on $50,000 bond.
The crash occurred around 5:45 p.m. on May 9, 2016, as victim, Marcellos Anderson, 22, was walking along the sidewalk in the 2400 block of Union near East Parkway. Investigators said an SUV driven by Westbrook was westbound on Union when it left the road, struck a light pole and then hit Anderson.
Anderson was hospitalized in critical condition and died from his injuries a month later on June 7.
Investigators said Westbrook was reading a text message on his cell phone when the crash occurred.
