Defendant Dewayne Waters, 36, pled guilty to aggravated kidnapping as he was about to go to trial this week in Criminal Court before Judge Lee Coffee.
Aggravated kidnapping is a felony that includes false imprisonment with bodily injury to the victim.
The incident began around 1 in the morning on July 5, 2017, when Waters came to her home near Ketchum and Pendleton in South Memphis, pulled her by the hair and then kicked, punched and choked her.
Hours later the woman managed to escape with her baby when Waters fell asleep in a bedroom.
The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Attys. Meghan Fowler and Matt Haywood.
Fowler is with the DA’s Special Prosecution Unit which seeks maximum sentencing for repeat felony offenders. Haywood is with the DA’s Domestic Violence Unit which prosecutes felony cases of domestic assault and homicide committed by intimate partners.
