Motorist Indicted in Hit-and-Run Death

Sept. 19, 2019 – A Mississippi woman was indicted Thursday in connection with the hit-and-run traffic death of a 55-year-old pedestrian earlier this year on Poplar Avenue in East Memphis, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Dasmine Joy Garrison, 24, of Olive Branch, Miss., was indicted on the felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving death. She is free on $1,000 bond.
The incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. on Feb. 21 this year in the westbound lanes of Poplar Avenue east of Estate Place. Police said Robert Watkins, 55, was struck and killed as he was crossing Poplar. The driver fled the scene.
Two days later, Garrison went to the Memphis Police traffic office and admitted to being the responsible driver.
The case is being handled by Felony Asst. Austin Nichols of the DA’s Vertical Team 5 which handles cases from General Sessions Division 13 and Criminal Court Division 9.
