Memphis High School Student Indicted on Murder Charges

MEMPHIS, TN October 18, 2013 – A Memphis high school student has been indicted on first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy at a graduation party this spring near Summer and Graham.
Antwion Dowdy, 19, allegedly shot and killed Sharquette Smith after the party broke up when some partygoers began flashing gang signs and taunting one another, police investigators said.
Police said some 60 young people showed up at the party after someone posted it on Facebook.
Dowdy, an 11th grade student at Douglass High School, also was indicted on three counts of aggravated assault.
The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on May 18, 2013 in the 500 block of Sharon Drive.
The case will be prosecuted by the Multi-Agency Gang Unit Prosecution Team.
The MGU Prosecution Team consists of Assistant United States Attorneys from the Western District and Assistant District Attorneys from the Shelby County District Attorney’s Gang and Narcotics Prosecution Unit. The MGU Prosecution Team Commander is Ray Lepone, Chief Prosecutor of the Shelby County District Attorney General’s Gang and Narcotics Prosecution Unit.
