Clinton Austin was convicted of the felony offense by a Criminal Court jury in the case involving the young girl who was a member of the extended family.
The incident occurred Feb. 12, 2011, in a bathroom at a residence on Nathan Avenue near Summer and Highland.
The girl’s mother had just returned home and became suspicious when she saw Austin and the child coming out of the bathroom.
Austin, 50, faces 8 to 12 years in prison with no parole when he is sentenced Dec. 12 by Judge Glenn Wright.
Austin will be placed on the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry and will be under community supervision for life.
The case was handled by assistant district attorney Terre Fratesi of the Special Victims Unit.
The SVU prosecutes cases of sexual abuse and severe physical abuse of child victims, rape of adult victims, and abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults.
SVU reviews child cases cooperatively with the Child Protection Investigative Team (CPIT).
