Dwayne Wright Convicted of Aggravated Rape

MEMPHIS, TN – August 31st, 2012 Dwayne Wright age 33, was convicted of aggravated rape of a woman inside a downtown Memphis night club.
The Memphis Police Department investigation identified Wright, then age 23, as the suspect responsible for the April 10th, 2002 aggravated rape of a 29 year-old woman inside a night club at 197 Beale Street. The woman reported that a male matching the description of Wright grabbed her and pushed her into the men’s room of the club. There the male forcefully raped her.
Examination of the victim at the Memphis Sexual Assault Resource Center revealed the woman sustained physical injuries from the attack. DNA evidence collected from the victim was submitted to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and entered it into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).
The CODIS entry returned an exact match to Wright.
Evidence at trial revealed that Wright forced intercourse with the victim without her consent inside the men’s room at the club.
Aggravated rape is a class “A” felony with a mandatory sentence of fifteen (15) to twenty-five (25) years with no possibility of parole. By law, Wright is required to register as a sex offender and will be under community supervision for life. Wright is scheduled for sentencing on September 27th, 2012.
The case was handled in Criminal Court Division IX by Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Nichols, Chief Prosecutor and Assistant District Attorney Eric Christensen of the Shelby County District Attorney General’s Special Victims Unit.
