MEMPHIS - Apr. 11, 2014 - A 33-year-old man has been convicted of first-degree murder in the 2012 shooting death of a teen in a southeast Memphis apartment complex, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Amy Weirich.
A Criminal Court jury convicted Robert Townsend of killing Markeith Bohanon, 19, on Aug. 9, 2012, at the Eastwood Park Apartments on Getwell Road near Knight Arnold.
Townsend has two prior violent felony convictions and was sentenced to life in prison without parole under the state’s three-strikes law.
Witnesses told the Criminal Court jury this week that Townsend chased Bohanon through the complex and shot him in the back with a snub-nosed revolver following a dispute over Townsend’s girlfriend.
After the shooting Townsend fled the city, but was captured several weeks later in Daytona Beach, Fla., and returned to Memphis.
The case was handled by assistant district attorneys Alanda Dwyer and Pam Stark.
