MEMPHIS - June 2, 2014 - A man pretending to be a buyer interested in a car that was advertised on Craigslist two years ago was convicted of carjacking, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Amy Weirich.
Rodney Bryant, 24, contacted the seller of the 1988 Chevrolet Caprice on Aug. 27, 2012, and arranged to meet with him in the 1300 block of Claybrook Cove in North Memphis to inspect the vehicle.
During a test drive Bryant asked the owner if he had the car’s title and when the owner displayed the title Bryant pulled a handgun and forced the owner out of the car, according to testimony in the trial.
Bryant drove off in the Caprice, but was arrested three days later when he was seen still driving the car.
He faces eight to 12 years in prison when he is sentenced July 2 by Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee.
The case was handled by assistant district attorneys Lessie Rainey and Sam Winnig.
