Teen Pleads Guilty to Killing Mother, Sentenced to 25 Years

MEMPHIS - June 5, 2014 - A teenager charged with killing his mother last year by setting their Hickory Hill house on fire pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison with no parole, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Jonathan Ray, 15, admitted setting the fire that killed his mother, Gwendolyn Wallace, on April 5 last year at the home on Bethay Drive.
Ray, who was 14 at the time, also pleaded guilty to aggravated arson and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The sentences will be completed concurrently.
The plea was accepted by Criminal Court Judge James Lammey Jr.
The case was handled by assistant district attorneys Glen Baity and Bryce Phillips.
