MEMPHIS - June 6, 2014 - A first-degree murder indictment has been returned against a man charged with shooting his girlfriend to death last year, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Xavier Becton, 40, shot Tierria Sims on Oct. 31 last year as she returned to her home in the 3800 block of Inverness near Winchester and Hacks Cross in southeast Memphis.
He told officers that his gun went off as they were struggling for it during an argument, though one witness told investigators that Sims yelled, “No. No, please,” just before the witness heard a shot.
Sims, 35, was found on the sidewalk in front of her home.
Becton called sheriff’s deputies from a fast-food parking lot in the 7900 block of Winchester where they found a loaded 40-cal. pistol in his front pocket. He surrendered without incident.
