MEMPHIS – Aug. 13, 2014 - A former Memphis police officer has been indicted on sexual battery and other charges stemming from an incident in which a motorist said she was groped during a traffic stop in Whitehaven, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Amy Weirich said Wednesday.
The 30-year-old woman said Officer Meekose Evans stopped her car on Feb. 11 this year at Raines and Faronia in Whitehaven because her tag lights were out and then discovered her driver’s license was suspended.
She said Evans told her to follow him to an isolated area near the nearby Hillcrest Apartments, put her in the back of his squad car and asked what she would do for him to avoid getting a ticket.
The woman said Evans told her to expose her breasts and that the officer then began fondling them. She later reported the incident to the police Internal Affairs Bureau and identified Evans in a photo spread.
He also has been indicted on charges of official misconduct and official oppression. All are felonies that carry one to six years in prison.
Memphis Police Department terminated Evans on June 3, 2014.
Evans, 30, is scheduled to be in Criminal Court on Aug. 21. He is free on $20,000 bond.
