Mother Convicted of Contributing to Child’s Truancy

Sherrie Daly Sherrie Daly SCSO
MEMPHIS - Aug. 22, 2014 - The mother of a teenage boy who had 52 unexcused absences from Germantown Middle School in 2012-13 has been convicted of criminal charges, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Friday.
Sherrie Daly, 38, was found guilty of contributing to the unruly behavior of her son by failing to have him attend school for extended periods.
The case represents the first local prosecution under the statute in which truancy is the underlying issue.
School officials testified that the boy also was tardy on numerous occasions and that their repeated efforts to have Daly correct the problems were unsuccessful.
Daly, the former wife of professional golfer John Daly, faces up to 11 months and 29 days in jail when she is sentenced on the misdemeanor conviction on Sept. 29 by Criminal Court Judge James Beasley Jr.
The case was handled by assistant district attorneys Pamela Fleming Stark and Austin Scofield.
