MEMPHIS – Aug. 29, 2014 - A Florida sex offender already serving a 15-year prison sentence there has been given an additional 25 years Thursday for raping the same child in Tennessee, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Friday.
Marc Anthony Baechtle, 46, will finish the remaining eight years of his Florida sentence before he begins serving his Tennessee sentence which carries no parole.
Authorities said Baechtle’s sexual assaults on the child began when she was 10 and continued for several years and in several states.
The girl, now an adult, told the court Thursday that Baechtle ripped her childhood from her and that she testified against him in trial in July so he could not do the same to others. She asked Criminal Court Judge James Beasley Jr. to sentence Baechtle to the 25-year maximum.
In a statement to the court, Baechtle said he was sorry for his actions.
“I hope you give me the maximum sentence,” he said, “because I deserve it."
Baechtle will be on the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry and under Community Supervision for life. In Florida he is classified as a Sexual Predator under the law.
The case was handled by Carrie Shelton, chief prosecutor of the DA’s Special Victims Unit (SVU), and by assistant district attorney Abby Wallace also of the SVU.
The unit prosecutes cases of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse of child victims, rape and aggravated of adult victims, and abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults.
SVU reviews child-victim cases with Shelby County’s multi-agency Child Protection Investigative Team.
