Man Pleads Guilty to Sex Trafficking Minor

Patrick Cathey Patrick Cathey SCSO
MEMPHIS – Dec. 18, 2014 - A 22-year-old man has pleaded guilty to eight counts of trafficking a minor for commercial sex acts and was sentenced to eight years in prison, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Patrick Cathey was arrested in January by police detectives with the Organized Crime Unit who were targeting prostitutes advertising online and meeting customers at a hotel in the 900 block of Shady Grove in East Memphis.
A police decoy met with a 17-year-old girl at the hotel and learned she had been forced into prostitution by Cathey who was arrested in the hotel parking lot.
The girl said she provided Cathey with about $6,000 over the previous weeks by having sex with other men. She also said Cathey would not let her leave and threatened her with a gun when he accused her of withholding money or trying to run away.
The girl approved the court settlement Wednesday and has recently finished her first semester of college.
In addition to his serving the prison sentence approved by Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee, Cathey must register as a violent sex offender.
The case was handled by assistant district attorney Katie Ratton of the DA’s Special Victims Unit which prosecutes cases of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse of child victims; rape and aggravated rape of adult victims, and abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults.
SVU reviews child-victim cases cooperatively with Shelby County’s multi-agency Child Protection Investigative Team.
