MEMPHIS – Jan. 30, 2015 - An Olive Branch, Miss., man has been indicted on charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving death stemming from the 2013 death of an elderly man on I-55, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Friday.
Defendant William A. Hancock, 29, is free on $10,000 bond.
The incident occurred at around 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 28, 2013, when Charles Gary, 69, was struck in the left emergency lane of I-55 south of Shelby Drive.
Investigators said the man was retrieving items from the roadway when he was hit by a dark-colored SUV that fled at high rate of speed without stopping to render aid to the victim.
About 30 minutes later police in Horn Lake, Miss., found an unoccupied 2012 Nissan Pathfinder with heavy front-end damage parked at a drugstore at Stateline Road and Millbranch.
The vehicle was registered to Hancock who called police a short time later and told them he had been involved in an accident.
