Teen Indicted on Child Rape Charges

MEMPHIS – Feb. 13, 2015 - A teenager babysitter has been indicted on charges that he sexually assaulted young boys left in his care in 2012 and 2013, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Amy Weirich said Friday.
Deangelo Norton, now 20, of the 2400 block of Charjean Cove, was indicted on charges of rape of a child and attempted rape of a child.
Investigators said Norton raped one 7-year-old boy on more than one occasion during the month of August in 2012 while babysitting in the 1300 block of Clementine.
On Oct. 4, 2013, investigators said, Norton tried to have sex with another 7-year-old boy he was babysitting at the Clementine address.
Norton was 17 at the time.
Rape of a child is a felony that would carry 25 years in prison with no parole. Attempted rape of a child would carry 8 to 12 years with no parole.
The case is being handled by Carrie Shelton, chief prosecutor of the DA’s Special Victims (SVU) which prosecutes cases of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse of child victims; rape and aggravated rape of adult victims, and abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults.
SVU reviews child-victim cases cooperatively with Shelby County’s multi-agency Child Protection Investigative Team.
