MEMPHIS – Feb. 13, 2015 - Two men were convicted Friday of setting up an armed robbery in which one of the defendants was sitting in a car with the victim and her four children, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Alex Goodwin, 23, and Joey Lee, 25, face 8 to 12 years in prison when they are sentenced for aggravated robbery on March 31 by Criminal Court Judge W. Mark Ward.
The incident occurred on Feb. 11, 2011, at the Village Green Apartments in southeast Memphis when several men with guns robbed the woman as she sat in her car with her four children and Goodwin.
The robbers stole her purse, cellphone and cash she had just received from her tax refund.
During the investigation, however, Goodwin gave police conflicting information and gave police permission to look at his cellphone.
Armed with a search warrant, investigators found text messages on the phone in which Goodwin and a person named “Joey” were setting up the woman to be robbed. The woman later picked Lee from a photo spread as one of her robbers.Investigators also searched Lee’s apartment and found the victim’s cellphone and a large sum of cash taken from her in the robbery.
The case was handled by assistant district attorneys Greg Gilbert and Omar Malik.
