MEMPHIS – May 29, 2015 - A 58-year-old man has been convicted of collecting nearly $5,800 in mileage reimbursements from the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center for trips he never made, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Friday.
A Criminal Court on Thursday jury found defendant Jimmy Wilson guilty of theft of property over $1,000, a felony that carries punishment of 2 to 12 years in prison.
An investigation showed that between September 2010 and January 2011 Wilson filed for mileage reimbursement from the VA for dozens of trips to and from the hospital from his home listed as being in Tupelo, Miss.
Wilson, however, did not live in Tupelo and, in fact, was spending many nights at the Memphis Union Mission.
For veterans receiving treatment for a service-connected disability, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will reimburse the veteran for travel.
Wilson will be sentenced on July 8 by Judge Chris Craft.
The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Melanie Cox.
