North Memphis Man Pleads Guilty to Aggravated Rape, Robbery

February 29, 2012 –Dewey Crowder, age 28, pled guilty to the 2011 aggravated rape and robbery of a woman in North Memphis.
The incident occurred on May 23, 2011. Crowder attacked the 20 year-old woman as she was walking to work in the area of Chelsea Avenue and Third Street. He forced her into a vacant field and raped her. He also robbed the woman of personal belongings during the assault.
The woman was able to notify Memphis Police officers and provide complete description of Crowder. Later the same day, Memphis Police officers assigned to the South Main Precinct located Crowder near 704 North Sixth Street. He was arrested and charged for the crimes.
Brooks Yelverton, prosecutor for the District Attorney’s Special Victims Prosecution Unit prosecuted the case. Crowder entered the guilty plea before the Judge James Beasley, Jr.
Crowder, also known as “White Boy”, will serve sentence of 18 years, with no possibility of parole. He must submit to community supervision for life and must register with the state as a violent sexual offender.
