MEMPHIS – Feb. 27, 2015 - A 39-year-old man was indicted Thursday on three counts of sexual exploitation of minors after hundreds of images of child pornography were found on his computer, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Omar Smadi of the 4000 block of Sawgrass Drive in southeast Memphis is free on $15,000 bond.
MPD Investigators were led to his home in October 2013 after a laptop computer was stolen from a Tennessee Valley Authority vehicle.
Anti-theft software in the laptop led authorities to Smadi’s home where they found the stolen TVA laptop which was in his bedroom and had been used to download child pornography, according to investigators.
They also discovered hundreds of images of child pornography loaded on a computer disk.
Sexual exploitation of a child is a felony that carries from 8 to 30 years in prison.
The case is being handled by Carrie Shelton, chief prosecutor of the DA’s Special Victims Unit which prosecutes cases of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse of child victims; rape and aggravated rape of adult victims, and abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults.
SVU reviews child-victim cases cooperatively with Shelby County’s multi-agency Child Protection Investigative Team.
