MEMPHIS, TN -November 27, 2013 - Criminal charges were dismissed in Criminal Court Wednesday against an independent contractor for FEDEX Ground who was involved in a truck-repair accident in January in which another worker was killed, said Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich.
Angelo Fields, 30, of Fort Worth, Texas, was charged with reckless homicide in the death of another worker, Hong Dao, on Jan. 25 this year at the FEDEX facility at 555 Compress in South Memphis.
Fields, Dao and another man were making repairs on a trailer before it could be taken on the road. After repairs were made to a brake hose, Fields got behind the wheel of the cab and began pulling forward, but Dao was still repairing a flat tire on the trailer's rear passenger-side.
Dao was crushed by the wheels supporting the second of the tandem trailers.
Although Fields was indicted on criminal charges, assistant district attorney Greg Gilbert said further review of the case indicated that Fields bore no criminal responsibility in the case.
Gilbert said the case was a matter for the civil courts.
