Opinion: A primer on 911 – how to ‘help us help you’

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Daily Memphian) — April is 911 Education Month.

What comes to mind when you think of 911 education? Do you picture a classroom of elementary-aged children being informed to dial 911 for emergencies? We also teach them their address and make sure they can recite it. 

In the past year I have taken over 1,900 calls to 911, and I’m convinced that a refresher course is in order for children and adults alike. You never know when you may need to call for help for yourself or someone else, but I don’t think anyone pre-plans and places “dial 911” on their to-do list. 

Here are some tips to help you become an effective 911 caller.
