DA's Office Commemorates National Crime Victims' Rights Week with Bridge Lighting Ceremony

Shelby County, TN - In honor of National Crime Victims' Rights Week, the Shelby County District Attorney's Office will host a bridge lighting ceremony, illuminating the Memphis Bridge to honor victims of crime. The ceremony will take place on April 25 at 7:30 PM, symbolizing our community's commitment to support and remember those affected by crime.

The significance of this event is underscored by the sobering statistics from 2022, where nearly 20 million individuals in the United States fell victim to various crimes. Over 6.6 million of these incidents involved violent crimes such as rape or sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault, with only approximately 42% reported to law enforcement.

This year's theme for National Crime Victims' Rights Week is "How Can You Assist? Providing options, services, and encouragement for survivors." It's imperative that we cultivate an environment where victims and survivors feel secure discussing their experiences openly. This theme strives to guarantee that everyone within a community is aware of the resources and avenues available for crime victims and survivors, extending from friends, family, and colleagues to neighbors, service providers, and other trusted community members.

At the Shelby County DA's Office, our dedicated team of over 20 victim witness coordinators tirelessly works to offer support, services, and resources to victims and witnesses. The team works with thousands of victims and witnesses, with approximately 14,000 new victims and witnesses each year.

“It is important to underscore the significance of observing National Crime Victims' Rights Week,” said Amy McCullough, Director of Victim Witness Services. “It is not merely a formality; it is an acknowledgment of the profound impact crime has on individuals and communities, and a reaffirmation of our commitment to support and empower those affected.”

Shelby County DA Steve Mulroy echoed McCullough’s sentiments.

“By commemorating Crime Victims' Rights Week, we send a clear message that victims of crime are not forgotten or overlooked. We stand in solidarity with them, offering compassion, support, and resources to help them navigate the often overwhelming aftermath of their situation,” said DA Mulroy.

The bridge lighting ceremony is open to the public. The brief ceremony will begin promptly at 7:30 PM—with the bridge lighting happening shortly after.

The event will be held at Memphis Suffrage Monument, located behind the U of M Law School Library on 1 N Front St.
