DA’s Office Releases Video in Officer-Involved Shooting Death of Tyrin Johnson
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office is releasing video related to the July 5, 2026, shooting in downtown Memphis in which National Guard members fired at Tyrin Johnson, who died at the scene.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s investigation is nearing completion but remains ongoing. The release of the video does not represent a determination by the District Attorney’s Office regarding criminal charges.
“I made a commitment to release videos when doing so would not interfere with an investigation,” said District Attorney Steve Mulroy. “At this time, releasing the video will not compromise the work the TBI has done so far or its ability to complete the investigation. We’re honoring our commitment to transparency while that work continues.”
According to investigative reports, two Memphis Police Department officers were in the downtown entertainment zone on July 5 when they heard shots. The officers reported seeing a man carrying a handgun, zig-zagging and ducking in the area from which the shots had come. They called to the man, later identified as Johnson, in an attempt to make contact.
The reports indicate that Johnson fled on foot and the officers pursued him, with National Guard members joining the pursuit. After Johnson turned onto Union Avenue, two National Guard members fired shots at him.
According to the medical examiner’s findings, Johnson died at the scene from a gunshot wound that entered his back and exited through his chest.
The video is available here.
No charging decisions have been made, as TBI’s investigation is ongoing.
