Motorist Guilty of DUI for 4th Time

March 16, 2022 – A Frayser man has been convicted of driving while intoxicated for the fourth time, a felony under Tennessee law, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

A Criminal Court jury this week convicted defendant Joseph T. Ross Jr., 54. He is set for sentencing on April 20, and remains free on $15,000 bond.

At around 10 p.m. on March 22, 2019, deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office spotted a green SUV traveling at a high rate of speed on Frayser Boulevard. They followed the vehicle to Ross’s residence in the 3700 block of Debby Drive where they arrested him in the vehicle.

Deputies said Ross appeared to be intoxicated and that they found a bottle of whisky on the front seat floorboard. They also reported that Ross was combative and that a chemical agent was used to help subdue him.

A blood draw showed his BAC to be .214, more than two times the threshold for proof of intoxication. Ross’s conviction this week follows previous DUI convictions in 2018, in 2016, and in 2013.

The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Vanessa Murtaugh of the District Attorney’s DUI Unit which prosecutes all DUI and vehicular homicide cases in the Criminal Courts.

Members of the DUI Unit also work with law enforcement to reduce DUI-related crashes, and conduct training sessions to keep law enforcement officers up to date on new laws and changes in current laws.

Pair Plead Guilty in Murder Outside Motel

Two men who were set for trial Monday entered guilty pleas in the shooting death of a 54-year-old man outside of a motel on Sycamore View two years ago, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

March 15, 2022 – Two men who were set for trial Monday entered guilty pleas in the shooting death of a 54-year-old man outside of a motel on Sycamore View two years ago, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Defendants Joshua Black, 23, and Daron Clayborne, 21, pled guilty to second-degree murder in Criminal Court, and were sentenced to 40 years in prison without the possibility of parole.

The case involved the shooting of Jimmy A. Moore shortly after midnight on Dec. 8, 2020, while he smoked a cigarette outside of the American Best Value Inn and Suites in the 1500 block of Sycamore View Road.

Investigators said the two defendants attacked him, struck him in the head with an object, and then went through his pockets. During the robbery attempt, one of the suspects shot Moore in the stomach. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Surveillance video showed the assailants driving away in a white Ford Taurus with a temporary license tag. Sheriff’s deputies located the car at a residence in Raleigh where Black was located and arrested. Clayborne was arrested later at another location.

Second Shooter Pleads Guilty in Murder Case

A 23-year-old man pled guilty Monday to killing one man and wounding another in 2018 after opening fire on another car near Shelby Drive and Riverdale Road in southeast Memphis, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

March 15, 2022 – A 23-year-old man pled guilty Monday to killing one man and wounding another in 2018 after opening fire on another car near Shelby Drive and Riverdale Road in southeast Memphis, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Jaelen Bell, one of three defendants in the case, pled guilty to second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder as jury selection was scheduled to begin in his trial. He was sentenced to 28 years in prison without the possibility for parole.

The incident occurred on March 28, 2018, when victims Christopher Smith and his cousin, both 23, began looking for the cousin’s vehicle that had just been stolen from a service station. They became suspicious when a car with the three defendants drove slowly by with the occupants staring at them.

Convinced the three were somehow involved in the auto theft, Smith and his cousin began following the vehicle as it headed north on Riverdale. When defendants turned onto Cognac Cove, they turned around so their vehicle was facing the car that was following them.

At that point, Bell, his brother Christian Key, 17, and Demerrick Porter, 18, jumped out and began shooting, killing Smith with two shots to the head and wounding his cousin in the leg.

The three defendants soon were developed as suspects, and all admitted firing at the victims. Porter was convicted in trial last year and is serving a 38-year prison sentence. Key, now 21, is scheduled for trial this summer.

Woman Indicted in Uncle’s Shooting Death

A 51-year-old woman has been indicted in the early-morning shooting death of her uncle in 2020 following a family Christmas party at his Frayser home, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

March 8, 2022 – A 51-year-old woman has been indicted in the early-morning shooting death of her uncle in 2020 following a family Christmas party at his Frayser home, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

A grand jury indicted Jessie Ann Brown on a count of second-degree murder. She is being held on $500,000 bond.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Dec. 20, 2020, at the home of Quint Crowder in the 1500 block of Paullus Drive. Investigators said Brown began pounding on a bedroom and told Crowder’s wife that she had killed him.

They walked down the hall and into the den where Crowder, 58, was on the floor, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to a hospital where he died later that day.

Man Convicted in Frayser Kidnap, Rape

March 5, 2022 – A 28-year-old man was convicted Friday of sexually assaulting a Frayser woman as she was returning home from work in 2017, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

A Criminal Court jury deliberated just 10 minutes before convicting Michael M. Cook Jr. on one count of aggravated rape and two counts of aggravated kidnapping. He remains in custody and will be sentenced next month.

The woman testified that Cook abducted her in the driveway of her home around 6 a.m. on Aug. 20, 2017, showing her a gun on his hip and forcing her to accompany him to a nearby vacant house.

He raped her there and kept the condom that he used, putting it in his pocket. He then told her to count to 200 before she moved, or that he would come back and kill her.

Hours after the rape, police recovered a stolen car a block from the defendant’s home. Inside the car they found items the victim had described her rapist wearing, including a black ski mask, a black thermal hoodie and black jeans.

The condom also was found in the car, and testing by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation lab showed a positive match for both the victim’s and the defendant’s DNA on the condom.

The case was prosecuted by Asst. Dist. Attys. Devon Dennis and Gavin Smith of the District Attorney’s Special Victims Unit (SVU) which handles cases involving rape, child sexual abuse, severe physical abuse of children, elder abuse, and vulnerable-adult abuse.

Ex-Boyfriend Convicted in Attack on Woman

A jury Thursday convicted a Raleigh man of shooting his former girlfriend in the head after confronting her in a parking lot where he left her to die, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

March 4, 2022 – A jury Thursday convicted a Raleigh man of shooting his former girlfriend in the head after confronting her in a parking lot where he left her to die, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

The victim survived, however, and testified this week against her assailant, Deuterondus Anderson who was convicted in Criminal Court of attempted first-degree murder, employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony, and convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

Anderson, 37, remains in custody and will be sentenced next month.

The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 20, 2016, as the victim, then 27, was returning to her apartment in Raleigh. Witnesses said they heard loud arguing followed by gunshots.

The victim was shot in the face and left unable to speak for months. A baby she was carrying was stillborn. She and others identified Anderson as the gunman. He was arrested two months later.

The shooting left the victim with debilitating injuries.

Anderson still faces charges of allegedly soliciting and conspiring from jail to make payments to have his former girlfriend and a witness killed to prevent them from testifying against him in trial.

The trial this week was handled by Felony Asst. Paige Munn of the District Attorney’s Crime Strategies & Narcotics Prosecution Unit (CSNPU) and by Asst. Dist. Atty. Samuel D. Winnig of the District Attorney’s Special Prosecution Unit. (SPU).

The CSNPU handles cases involving gang members and violent crimes, including homicides, aggravated robberies, kidnappings, rapes, and narcotics trafficking.

The SPU seeks maximum sentencing for repeat felony offenders.

Boyfriend Guilty in Murder of Pregnant Woman

March 4, 2022 – A man who shot his pregnant girlfriend 17 times and kept her body in the house for nearly a week was convicted Friday on two counts of first-degree murder, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

A Criminal Court jury rejected an insanity defense and held defendant Ricky Anderson II, 30, criminally responsible for the 2018 murders. He will be sentenced to life in prison.

The incident occurred at a residence in the 1900 block of Sparks Ave. in South Memphis where police were called on Jan 30, 2018, to investigate the discovery of a body. Inside they found 26-year-old Karmeshi Pipes on the floor and partially covered by a bedspread.

Investigators said it appeared she had been dead at least for several days. Her family told police they had not heard from her since her baby shower that was held a week earlier. She was nine months pregnant, and her unborn son was to be delivered on Feb. 7.

An autopsy showed that the victim had been shot 17 times by a handgun found at the scene.

The case was handled by Chief Prosecutor Greg Gilbert of the District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) handles cases of domestic assault and homicide committed by intimate partners and by Asst. Dist. Atty. Julie Cardillo of the District Attorney’s Vertical Team 2 which prosecutes cases in General Sessions Div. 9 (Mental Health Court) and in Criminal Court Division 2.

The DVU works closely with the Shelby County Family Safety Center and other victim-service providers, such as Kindred Place and the YWCA, to provide services and assistance to victims of domestic violence.

March 4, 2022 – A Raleigh man has been indicted on murder and other felony counts stemming from a shooting last summer near an auto parts store that ended with him shooting himself in the foot and leaving his cell phone behind, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

A grand jury indicted Jamarius D. Jones, 28, on first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, and four counts of employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. He is being held without bond.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Sept. 13, 2021, police were called to the 5000 block of Yale Road at Covington Pike where Darryl Jenkins, 34, was found shot to death in the parking lot of the auto parts store where he worked.

Also, couple driving in the area with their small child told police their car was struck by several gunshots around the time they saw a man, later identified as Jones, shooting at Jenkins who was taking out the trash.

Police said Jones had a pistol in each hand during the incident and that he accidentally shot himself in the foot. He then began walking away from the scene, firing several more shots, and accidentally dropping his cell phone which was recovered by crime scene investigators.

Jones was charged and arrested two days later.

March 3, 2022 – A 56-year-old man has been indicted on first-degree murder charges related to the shooting of an acquaintance during an argument last year outside a convenience store in the Parkway Village area, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Defendant Francisco Oliva is being held without bond in the Shelby County Jail.

The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. on Sept. 25, 2021, on a service station parking lot at South Perkins Road and Cottonwood Road where Oliva and 43-year-old acquaintance Juan Zavala-Delgado got into an argument involving longstanding issues, investigators said.

The victim was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene. Surveillance video from a nearby store shows the defendant shoot the victim, pause, and then shoot him again.

Oliva was arrested at a nearby restaurant a short time later.

The case is being handled by Chief Prosecutor Carrie Bush and Asst. Dist. Atty. Robert Steele of the District Attorney’s Vertical Team 4 which prosecutes cases in General Sessions Division 12 and in Criminal Court Division 4.

March 2, 2022 – A Memphis teen has been indicted in the shooting death of a 41-year-old woman as she was standing outside a corner store in southwest Memphis in 2020, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

A grand jury indicted Ladarrius Perry, 17, on a count of first-degree murder. He is being held on $450,000 bond in the Shelby County Jail East.

Investigators said that on the afternoon of Dec. 20, 2020, Perry, then 16, walked up to Tracy McGee and shot her in the neck and in the back in the 400 block of King Road near Millwood Road. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Perry was developed as a suspect, and seven months later he was picked up in the same area by police. He told homicide investigators he shot the victim because she allegedly had taken a small amount of money from his cousin.

The case is being handled by Chief Prosecutor Carrie Bush of the District Attorney’s Vertical Team 4 which prosecutes cases in General Sessions Division 12 and in Criminal Court Division 4.

Man Convicted in Apartment Shooting

Feb. 28, 2022 – A jury Friday convicted a 50-year-old man of shooting into a North Memphis apartment where his former girlfriend, her sister-in-law and their three children were inside, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Antonio M. Turley was convicted on two counts of attempted second-degree murder and felony reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon. He is scheduled to be sentenced in April by Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee.

The incident occurred on July 27, 2012, at the Goodwill Village Apartments in the 2500 block of Peres Ave. shortly after Turley’s girlfriend told him she wanted to end their relationship. After shouting threats from outside, Turley fired five times into the apartment window and front door.

His girlfriend’s sister-in-law was shot in the stomach, but survived her injury. The three children, ages 5 to 11, were asleep in a back room.

Turley was a fugitive for five years before he was finally arrested. He has five prior felony convictions, including second-degree murder in 1991.

The trial was handled by Asst. Dist. Attys. Meghan Fowler and Jeff Jones of the District Attorney’s Special Prosecution Unit which seeks maximum sentencing for repeat felony offenders.

Guilty Plea in Cordova Neighborhood Homicide

Feb. 28, 2022 – A Cordova man has pled guilty in a 2019 neighborhood shooting death in which the victim was found clutching a piece of paper with a license tag number that helped lead to the suspect, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Bryant Ward, 26, pled guilty Thursday in Criminal Court to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The shooting of Bryan Hervey, 61, on May 15, 2019, in the 1200 block of Linnean Cove was captured on a resident’s doorbell camera. The footage shows the victim running towards the front door calling for help, while gunshots can be heard in the background.

The victim’s vehicle nearby had bullet holes and shattered windows. Sheriff’s deputies recovered more than two dozen shell casings from the scene.

Investigators said Hervey was clutching a piece of paper with a license number written on it, which enabled them to locate a vehicle in the neighborhood similar to the one from which the shots were fired. The license of that vehicle a close match with the license number the victim had in his hand. Ward was arrested several days later.

A witness said Ward became upset after making eye contact with Hervey as their vehicles passed. Ward then fired shots from the vehicle, then exited and continued shooting at the victim. Hervey was active in monitoring security in the neighborhood.

Motorist Indicted in Driveway Homicide

A 20-year-old man has been indicted on second-degree murder charges in the shooting of a motorist last year who had followed him to his mother’s home in southeast Memphis, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Feb. 25, 2022 – A 20-year-old man has been indicted on second-degree murder charges in the shooting of a motorist last year who had followed him to his mother’s home in southeast Memphis, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Defendant Tray Bledsoe also was indicted on one count of convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He is free on $75,000 bond.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Sept. 21, 2021, in the 1800 block of Myrna Lane where Bledsoe pulled into the driveway while another motorist stopped in the street at the end of the drive.

After a few minutes, the driver, Colton Burr, walked up the drive and exchanged words with Bledsoe, who pulled a gun and began shooting. He continued to shoot as Burr ran back down the drive and got into his car.

Burr, 32, was in the driver’s seat of his car where he later was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident was captured on a home security camera.

Feb. 25, 2022 – A South Memphis man has been indicted in the death of his best friend last year after he initially told others that the friend accidentally shot himself, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

A grand jury Thursday indicted Zavonne Bell, 20, on a count of reckless homicide. He is free on $75,000 bond.

The incident occurred on Jan. 27, 2021, at a residence in the 100 block of East McKellar Ave. in South Memphis where Bell, DeWayne Butler and another man were visiting in the living room.

Bell had been holding a pistol which he set down a table, and moments later Butler picked it up to examine it. Bell told the victim’s father that the gun then accidentally discharged as his son was handling it, striking him in the side of the head and killing him.

An autopsy the next day, however, showed no impressions or burns on the skin that would indicate a close contact wound.

On March 13, 2021, Bell told Butler’s father that he accidentally fired the shot that killed his son, who was 19. When the father notified police, Bell then told them he had only one bullet in the pistol and that he thought Butler had racked the slide and cleared the chamber.

Bell said moments later he picked the weapon up off the sofa and, while looking down at his cellphone, pointed it toward Butler and pulled the trigger, thinking the gun was empty. Butler was pronounced dead at the scene.

Feb. 24, 2022 – A Memphis teen was indicted Tuesday on murder and other felony charges related to the shooting death of a car passenger last year on Beale Street, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

A grand jury indicted 17-year-old Dorian Seay on counts of first-degree felony murder, attempted especially aggravated robbery, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held without bond.

The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. on April 17, 2021, as the victim, Dylan Lovell, 23, of West Memphis, was riding with a friend on Beale Street between Main Street and Front Street.

While they were stopped in traffic, someone in a nearby group commented on their car and two from the group then approached. Lovell was holding some play money and one of the men, identified as Seay, tried to grab it. When he failed, he pulled a gun and fired one time, striking Lovell in the chest.

The victim’s friend drove up to several police officers nearby for help. They began first aid after calling paramedics, but Lovell was pronounced dead soon after he was taken to a hospital.

Man Pleads Guilty to Separate Crimes Against Two Ex-Girlfriends and Baby

A 32-year-old man with a history of criminal conduct pled guilty Wednesday to three separate felonies in which two of the victims were former girlfriends and the third victim was the one-year-old son of another girlfriend, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Feb. 24, 2022 – A 32-year-old man with a history of criminal conduct pled guilty Wednesday to three separate felonies in which two of the victims were former girlfriends and the third victim was the one-year-old son of another girlfriend, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Latherio Richard entered guilty pleas in Criminal Court to attempted aggravated child abuse, kidnapping, and aggravated burglary. He was sentenced to a total of 35 years on all counts.

The first incident occurred in late March of 2019 when the baby son of his then 20-year-old girlfriend was taken to an emergency room for blisters on his feet and legs. Doctors determined the child had first- and second-degree burns consistent with being immersed in hot water. Richard had been babysitting the boy on the day the burns were discovered.

In another incident, Richard and a 22-year-old girlfriend on Jan. 28, 2018, got into an argument at a hotel on Shelby Oaks Drive where he pushed her head into a wall and refused to let her leave.

The third incident occurred around 1 a.m. on April 15, 2017, when Richard went to the Hickory Ridge-area apartment of a 25-year-old former girlfriend to get his belongings 10 months after their breakup. Richard forced his way inside where he pushed and shoved the woman, causing her to fall and break her ankle.

The cases were handled by Asst. Dist. Attys. Devon Dennis and Jermal Blanchard of the District Attorney’s Special Victims Unit (SVU) which prosecutes cases that include rape, child sexual abuse, severe physical abuse of child victims, elder abuse, and vulnerable adult abuse. The SVU was created as an expansion of the multi-agency Child Protection Investigative Team or CPIT.

Feb. 23, 2022 – A South Memphis man pled guilty Tuesday to sexually abusing the 9-year-old daughter of his former girlfriend while babysitting the child in 2018, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Defendant James T. Williams Jr., 33, pled guilty in Criminal Court to two counts of aggravated sexual battery and was sentenced to 15 years in prison without the possibility for parole.

Williams also will be on the Violent Sex Offender Registry and will be on Community Supervision for life.

The incident occurred in April of 2018 at Williams’ residence in the 1000 block of College St. where the child’s mother dropped her off on the way to work. Medical tests, including DNA, confirmed the young girl was sexually molested and that Williams was the offender.

The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Attys. Devon Dennis and Alyssa Hennig of the District Attorney’s Special Victims Unit (SVU) which prosecutes cases involving child rape and sexual abuse, severe physical abuse of children, elder abuse, and vulnerable adult abuse.

The SVU is an expansion of the multi-agency Child Protection Investigative Team known as CPIT.

Gunman Pleads Guilty in Shooting That Left Victim Paralyzed

Feb. 23, 2022 – A Memphis man charged in a shooting in 2019 that left the victim paralyzed pled guilty Tuesday and was sentenced to 23 years in prison, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Defendant Tavari Golden, 24, pled guilty to attempted first-degree murder in Criminal Court.

The incident occurred in the early-morning hours of July 14, 2019, at the Mill Creek Apartments near Shelby Drive and I-55 where the victim, his girlfriend and several members of her family were staying.

One of her cousins got into an argument over money with a woman just outside the apartment. When the woman left, the cousin, the victim and his girlfriend went to a nearby store to get gas and something to drink.

When they returned, the car of the woman involved in the earlier argument was parked near the apartment with two men standing nearby. The victim, 24, was the first to go up the stairs, but as he did the two men opened fire, striking him at least eight times in the legs, back, arms and chest. One bullet lodged in his spine, leaving him paralyzed and in a wheelchair.

The shooting was captured on a security camera at the complex. The other gunman has not been captured.

Man Indicted in Murder of Rhodes Student

Feb. 22, 2022 – A grand jury Tuesday returned first-degree murder and other felony indictments against a Memphis man related to a home-invasion robbery and shooting that claimed the life of a Rhodes College student last October, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Rainess Holmes III, 36, was indicted on felony counts of premeditated first-degree murder, murder in the perpetration of a robbery, murder in the perpetration of a burglary, especially aggravated robbery, especially aggravated burglary, especially aggravated kidnapping, four counts of aggravated robbery, and convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

He is being held without bond.

The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 3, 2021, when several men broke into a residence in the 700 block of North McLean demanding electronic items and other valuables from four Rhodes College students and a guest.

During the incident Andrew Rainer was shot in the chest when he tried to protect a 20-year-old female student who was being threatened. Rainer, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was shot in the hand.

After the intruders left, police were able to track one student’s stolen I-pad to the Summer Inn at 3024 Summer Ave. where Holmes had checked into a room. He ran to a drainage ditch and escaped, but he was arrested two days later at a residence on Powell in the Binghampton area.

Store Regular Indicted In Customer’s Death

Feb. 22, 2022 – A Whitehaven man was indicted Thursday in the death of a customer who was shot nearly a dozen times outside a tire shop last year on Knight Arnold Road near Getwell Road, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

A grand jury indicted Jerome Jamison, 28, on two counts of first-degree murder. He is being held without bond in the Shelby County Jail.

The incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on Oct. 3, 2021, outside the Brothers Tire Service and Towing where surveillance cameras recorded the shooting.

Investigators said Jamison, who frequently visited the store, began arguing with customer Milton Davidson outside the business and then began firing an assault-style rifle at him. After Davidson went down, Jamison pulled a handgun from the victim’s waistband and shot him several more times.

Davidson, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jamison was arrested two days later, asleep in a truck on Arnold Cove in the Oakhaven area near Memphis International Airport.

The case is being handled by Chief Prosecutor Stephanie Johnson of the District Attorney’s Vertical Team 2 which handles cases in General Sessions Division 9 (Mental Health Court) and in Criminal Court Division 2.
